Of course.

I'll summarise: A man named Tadashi Hikari was more or less singlehandedly responsible for starting the technology revolution that led to the establishment of a society based around AIs and the internet. He was a genius that laid down and created the framework for netnavis and a series of networks that required their assistance to navigate - hence the nickname of 'netnavi'.

He implemented true AI into his creations, but he was unable to finish everything he meant to accomplish...I believe. His son Yuuichiro continued his work. It was a rapid expansion that occurred in a matter of decades as humans came to grips with the new technology available to them.

Our society's progress with robotics is much less pronounced. Though there are certainly people who go into the robotics field, humanoid robot research has definitely slowed. Most machinery is used to augment our network technology.
